Obituary

Yvette S. Jones, 81, daughter of the late Leroy F. and Ruby Brown Scott, was born on March 11, 1940 in Columbia, SC. She departed this life on Thursday, August 05, 2021 at her residence.

At a young age, she moved to Sumter, SC with her parents and brother, Buzzy. For two years, she attended elementary school in Charleston, SC, and then came back to Sumter to attend Lincoln High, where she was in the French Club, Science Club, and Quill & Scrolls Echo Staff. Yvette was also a majorette, library assistant, and played basketball. She graduated as one of the top 10 seniors in 1957. Upon graduation, she attended West Virginia State College, where she sung with the choir.

Yvette married Nero M. Jones in 1959 in Queens, NY. They had two children, Sonjia & Maurice. She worked at Brooklyn State Hospital and then worked at a daycare. In 1966, she moved to Albany, NY and managed the YMCA Daycare. She begin to teach music, then attended College of St. Rose, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, which afforded her the opportunity to work for New York State Department of Affirmative Action, as Head of the Department. Upon retirement, she relocated to Sumter, SC to be close to her parents.

Yvette enjoyed the leisure of life. She would go on cruises, visit Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach as often as she could.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter and son-in-law, Sonjia & Derrick; three grandchildren: Adrian, Yvette Marie, and Gabrielle; one great-grandson, Alijah, whom she lived for; a brother, Buzzy; a aunt; a niece and many nephews, other relatives and friends.

There will be a private celebration of her life at 11am in the Fellowship area of Salem Chapel & Heritage Center on Friday, August 27, 2021.
