Obituary

Rev. Verner Douglas Spencer was born to Charles Rufus Spencer and Mary Jane Scott Spencer on September 15, 1920, he was the fifth of twelve children. The family attended Simmon Hill Baptist Church in Dixie, GA where he gave his life to Christ at an early age, it was said his family could see that he had a special relationship with God at that early age. His early childhood education was obtained from the schools of Brooks County GA. After graduation he aspired to attend Howard University but instead he was drafted into the Army, while he was in the army he served as a Military Police Officer, after he served his term he was honorably discharged, he resided in Los Angeles CA for a while then he moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he met Julia Ann Conyers, they married in December of 1947, to this union three children were born Carolyn Elaine Spencer, Verner Douglas Spencer Jr. who both preceded him in death, and a surprise addition Veronica Ruth Spencer-Frank who came later in their lives, she truly was a daddy's girl, and felt that her purpose was to care for her dear dad and that she did, she was with him holding his hand as he transitioned and took his final breath.
Rev. Spencer has been a strong Child of God since his youth. He often stood on the street corners of Philadelphia preaching the Word of God, he went into the homeless shelters and the missions to preach as his daughter played the piano and his wife sang. He organized crusades and Bible Studies throughout the city, he and his wife Julia also taught Bible Study in their home, he to the adults and his wife to the children. He grew in knowledge and study of the Bible, people use to call him the "walking, talking Bible", he attended The Jamison Bible College, Manna Bible Institute and The Philadelphia Biblical University. The family were members of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Philadelphia where he taught Bible Study weekly, the class grew, especially when he was teaching The Book of Revelation. He pastored for some years at the Church of The Open Bible. Another one of his loves was writing, he had been writing poems, songs, skits and plays for years, many of his skits were performed while he was in Philadelphia.
Upon retiring from his job up north they decided to move south and retired in Sumter, SC the birthplace of his wife Julia. They joined her old home church New Bethel Missionary Baptist under the leadership of the late Rev. J.C. Moore and the current leadership of Rev. Willie Wright. Continuing the Lord's work, Rev. Spencer joined many ministries and taught Men's Bible Study there, he also taught Bible Study outside of church and taught at the Senior Citizen Center that he faithfully attended until his health started to fail. He continued to use his writing gift and wrote many poems. Many of his poems were read at functions at New Bethel and the Senior Citizen Center. The family would laugh because he liked to sing when he preached but a lot of times it was a song most people didn't know but that did not stop him, he kept on singing.
With all the service he did for his Lord in his long life he did not neglect his family. He instilled the Word in them and did all he could to lead them to Christ, every night they had family devotions and he had his midnight prayer.
In 1995 his dear wife Julia went home to be with The Lord, he remained steadfast and stayed in SC until he went to one of his brother's funeral at his home in GA and became reacquainted with a childhood classmate Verna Fraiser in the 2000's, they married and he moved back to GA. While he was living there he continued to do God's Work, he rejoined his family's home church Simmon Hill Baptist Church and served as the assistant pastor under Rev. James Huewitt. While living in GA, he continued his gift of writing, this time being able to share it with many others, he was an esteemed executive member of The Famous Poets Society and had his sermons published weekly in the Quitman Free Press and The Thomasville Times. His wife passed later on in the years, afterward he moved back to SC with his family. Rev. Spencer was known for walking around his neighborhood and sometimes riding his old bike up until around five years ago when he fell. God blessed him to walk this earth for 100 abundant well served years, he touched so many lives. His daughter loves to say he was a kind, sweet, gentle God-fearing man and a faithful loving father and ever the gentleman. He loved his ties, he would put on a tie to mow the lawn. There are so many fond memories...he is already greatly missed.
Besides his daughter Veronica R. Spencer-Frank he leaves to cherish his memory, a grand-daughter Tiffany Nicole Frank Taylor (Dmitriece) who he loved with all his heart and a great-grandson Dmitriece Jamal Taylor II who he loved very dearly, he has one surviving brother Russell W. Spencer of Atlanta GA, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many of his daughter's friends who called him "daddy" because they felt that warmth from being around him, he also had many friends who loved, cared and respected him. 100 years... WELL DONE...CARES ALL PAST...HOME AT LAST...EVER TO REJOICE!!!
