Thelma G. Sutton, 83, widow of Norris Edward Sutton, Sr., and daughter of the late William Henry Grant and Fannie Frasier Grant. She was born May 4, 1934 in Sumter, SC.
Thelma Sutton attended the public schools of Sumter County. She was a 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School. Thelma was the licensed site property manager of Mt. Pisgah Apartments (James Village) for over 30 Years.
During Sutton's 50 plus years, she has given spiritual and moral guidance to the residents of James Village. Thelma has been a positive influence on the lives of many young people. She has nurtured, encouraged, urged, and persuaded many of them to better their lives by continuing their education.
Thelma realized that our youth is our future. She understood that their passion, dreams, and deeds of today are foundations for what is to come tomorrow. Because of this she has worked earnestly with James Village youth and other communities, providing them with many opportunities, and helping them to make the most of each day. Thelma was a proud member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church for over 60 years, where she enjoyed singing on the choir. Thelma Sutton has earned many rewards and recognition throughout her life, but most important the love and respect from all who knew her.
Thelma leaves behind precious members to be cherished by her nine grandchildren: Carlisha Sutton (Brandell) of the home, Endretta Summers and Sonya Paige both of Columbia, SC, Shontrell Sutton and Norris Sutton III both of Sumter, SC, Donte' Ramsey and Carlos Sutton, Jr. both of Atlanta, GA, Sergio Adams of Chula Vista, CA, Taralah Sutton of Jackson, MS, and Andre Sutton of Fayetteville, NC; twenty-six great-grandchildren: Reginay, Reginald, Rashad, Rakeem, De'Jion, Nyasia, Darrius, Demariyah, A'Layiah, Ja'Vian, Nassiem, Giannetta, Teazia, Ny'Juan, Carlos, Car'nya, Ke'mya, Carzhanay, Jada, Hakeem, Cardaisha, Demonte, Dominic, Jamal, Jordan, and Moe; one sister, Mattie Grant Williams of Brooklyn, NY; seven nieces: Joysett, Denise, Samone, Adrienne, Eileen, Hope, and Faith: three nephews: Stanley, Donnell, Tyrone; three special friends: Lois Lane, Vicki Heath, and Roslin Strong, and a host of great nieces and nephews.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, William and Fannie Grant; her husband, Norris E. Sutton, Sr., three sons: Norris E. Sutton II, Carlos S. Sutton, and MSG Endrie' R. Sutton; two sisters, Lillian Gooden and Wilhelmina Ashmond; and brother, William Edward Grant.
Public Viewing will be held on 5:30-9:00 pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Sutton will be placed in the church on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 1pm for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 2pm at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, 217 W Bartlette Street, Sumter, SC., with Pastor Laddie N. Howard, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Walker Cemetery.
