Obituary

Ruth Lee Hilton Conyers was born January 5, 1926 in Clarendon County, the daughter of the late Lillie Mae Hilton Smith and the late Willie Tindal. Ruth had two brothers, Thomas Smith and the late James "Sonny Boy" Smith. She was the widow of Deacon Johnnie Conyers. At age 94, she transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter. Prior to her passing she resided for 8 years at the Sumter Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Ruth attended public school in Clarendon County. She met and married Johnnie Conyers at an early age on June 1, 1941. In her early years of marriage, she worked diligently by her husband side in the cotton fields and tobacco fields until they were blessed with their eight children, upon which she became a dedicated housewife and mother. Children included sons Johnnie Lee (Deceased), Charlie Henry (Deceased), Willie Edward (Deceased), Larry, and Alvin. Daughters Mamie (Deceased), Loretta (Gerard), and Delores and a loving daughter-in-law, Annette Conyers. Ruth was blessed with seven grandchildren (Maurice, Dawn Michelle, Shavonna, Marcus, Jon, Shaton Leigh, and Nathan) and seven great grandchildren (Elgin, Zion, Landon, Jalen, Keyairra, Keyona, and Kamaron). In additions she leaves behind a host of relatives and friends.

Upon moving to Sumter, she became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully on many ministries including the Deaconess Ministry, Senior Missionary Ministry, and Bible-Study ministry. Ruth worked tirelessly for her church until her health began to fail. One special bible verse she lived by was Matthew 6:33 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

She enjoyed working in her yard growing beautiful flowers that her neighbors would come asking for pieces of her plants to put in their yards. She was known for her baking that included her cakes, pies and canning fruits and vegetables.
