At the age of 84, Ms. Rosa Lee Holmes-Scarborough answered God's call for a last appointment on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC where she embarked upon a new mission to reunite with family and friends in glory and to "Walk around heaven all day".
Rosa Lee was born on March 7, 1933 in Bishopville, SC to the late Henry Holmes, Sr. and the late Beulah Mae Hickman-Holmes. She was the widow of the late James Scarborough, Sr.
Rosa Lee was educated in the public schools of Lee County. She was an avid educational enthusiast and had a strong desire for learning. She instilled her love of learning in her children and communicated her belief that "knowledge is power" to everyone she knew.
Rosa Lee worked as a domestic in various settings for many years until she was medically retired.
At an early age, Rosa Lee joined Barnettsville Baptist Church in Bishopville, SC where she strengthened her belief in God Almighty and persevered on her Christian journey. Due to an extended illness, Rosa Lee faithfully read and studied her Bible in the serenity of her own home, and she always readily demonstrated her extensive Biblical knowledge to her pastor, church deacons, and family and friends. It was her pleasure to sit in the company of others and discuss all things Biblical. Two of her favorite Bible verses were continuously echoed to all who would listen: "Therefore, keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour..." Matthew 25:13; and "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble." Psalm 46:1.
Rosa Lee enjoyed lively conversations and fellowship with all people, and her favorite greeting was always, "Hello! What's the good news?"
Left to cherish fond memories are the following family members: four children, Mary S. Keels of Columbia, SC, Geraldine Benjamin of Mayesville, SC, Doshia Mae Scarborough of Columbia, SC, and Jerry Scarborough (Glenda) of Clarksville, TN; two sisters, Betty Ruth Bradley of Bishopville, SC and Carrie Bell Robinson of Sumter, SC; two special nieces, Elizabeth Greene of Sumter, SC and Doris Jean Slater of Fayetteville, NC; two special nephews, Deacon Irvin Holmes of Bishopville, SC and Elder Lee Holmes of Sumter, SC; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
