June 17, 1947 – January 25, 2018
Rodney Bobbie Lewellyn Koonce was born on June 17,1947 in Donalsonville, Georgia to the late Roxie and Chester Koonce. He departed this life to go home with the Lord on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Regency Hospital in Florence South Carolina.
Rodney was youngest out of 12 children. He was educated in Essex County Public School District. Rodney received his B.A. at Montclair State and his M.A. from NYU. In 1968 Rodney enlisted in the United States Army, where he served faithfully and selflessly as a Sergeant in the 63rd Signal Battalion. He also served In the Vietnam war. Rodney worked for the United States Postal Service as a Safety Inspector Supervisor until he retired in 2009. He took great pride in his work. Rodney enjoyed gardening, creating props, making his hot apple cider and socializing with all.
Rodney leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Paula Koonce; his two devoted sons, Rodney Jr.(Rodnique) of PA and Terrell Koonce of VA; five daughters: Shayla Koonce of NJ, Pamela Benjamin (Jamie) of AZ, Lawanna Simmons (Anthony) of NC, Karrell Darden of NC, and Lynn Herbin of SC; two sisters, Mildred Webb of NJ and Doris Koonce of NJ; two brothers: Perry Koonce (Estelle) of CO and John Koonce of NJ; sister in law, Fredericka Hills of AZ; brother in law, Victor Brunson of NV, eightteen grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Roxie; six brothers, James (Jimmy), Ernest, Alva, Larry, Edward and Lawrence; and one sister, Eloise Strickland.
Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 5:30-9:00pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. Koonce will be placed in the church on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 9am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 10am at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 714 Camden Hwy, Bishopville, SC, with Elder Deidra Conyers, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Florence National Cemetery, Florence, SC.
Family will receive friends at 207 Casa Nova Court, Bishopville, SC 29010.
