Robert Chatman Jr. , was born on November 11, 1930 in Lee County to the late Robert and Margaret Portlock Chatman. He departed this life on April 24, 2017 at Palmetto Health Tuomey. He was the youngest of eleven children.
He was educated in the Lee County School System. At a young age he joined Wayman Chapel AME Church, Sumter. He married Geneva Witherspoon and relocated to Baltimore , MD to this union five children were born. While living in Baltimore he attended Charity Baptist Church.
After the passing of his wife Geneva he later moved back to Sumter, SC where he met and married the late Violet White Chatman and later reinstated his membership to his family church Wayman Chapel AME Church where he faithfully attended until his health began to fail.
Robert was a very hardworking family oriented man. He really enjoyed the simple things in life.
He leaves to cherish his memories; four children, Laura May Chatman of Baltimore, MD, Francine Johnson of Baltimore, MD, Delores Eghapona of Sumter, SC and Robert Chatman III of Baltimore, MD; one brother, William Chatman of Sumter, SC; one sister-in-law, Almeta Chatman of Columbia, SC; eleven grandchildren; a host of great grands, nieces, nephews, cousins , other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Lee Chatman.
Public Viewing will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 2-7pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. Chatman will be placed in the church on Saturday at 2pm for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 3pm at Wayman Chapel AME Church, Sumter with Rev. Charlie Howard, Officiating
Interment will follow in Wayman Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at 1348 Cherryvale Drive, Sumter
