Sr.
March 6, 1944 – March 23, 2018
Richard Lee Gavin came into his season of birth on March 6, 1944 in Sumter, South Carolina to his parents, the late Rev. Arthur and Lurinda Alston Gavin.
Richard received his education in Sumter County Public Schools. He was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, S.C. under the direction of the late Rev. B.J. Weston.
Richard was a business man- He was the owner and operator of R.L. Gavin Mobile Home Service in Wedgefield, S.C. He was a hard worker. He was a horseman from the heart. Richard loved seeing, caring, and being the veterinarian for his animals. He was a dedicated man. He dedicated and spent so much time with his baby sister's son that many believed for a long time Larry was his son. They spent quality time together. He was a role model.
He was a member of the Golden Saddle Horse Club Riders. He received many awards and trophies during his time in the club.
On August 6, 1966 Richard married the love of his life, Ethel Lee Choice and from this union a child was born. Their marriage was very special and unique, he would get so amused by teasing her so much! Richard was known for having such a jokey and amusing personality. He was known for his gigantic smile and a joyous spirit. Richard was a people person and a great conversationalist, he would start a conversation with any and every one he met.
Richard departed this earthly life on Friday, March 23, 2018.
Richard leaves to cherish his loving memories a loving and devoted wife, Ethel Lee Choice Gavin of the home, Richard (Carolyn) Gavin of Wedgefield, S.C., other children include one daughter Sharon (Joseph) Williams, Queens, New York, two sons Herbert Davis, Dalzell, S.C., Brandon ( Kearston) Franklin, Orangeburg, S.C., two sisters, Mary Ann (Johnny) Wigfall, Ida Lee (Larry, Sr.) Nathaniel, Both of Wedgefield, S.C., two brothers, Johnny (Idell) Gavin, Columbia, S.C., William (Rebecca) Gavin, Fayetteville, N.C. one sister-in- law Amelia Dawson, Charlotte, N.C., one Brother – in- law Charlie (Shelia) Choice, Sumter, S.C. twelve grandchildren, a number of great grands, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Special cousin Richard Alston, Wedgefield, S.C., special friends William (Carolyn) Green, Cheraw, S.C.
He was preceded in death in addition to his parents one Brother Arthur Gavin, Jr.
Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 from 1-6pm at Job's Mortuary
Mr. Gavin will be placed in the church on Friday at 12noon for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 1pm at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center 101 S. Salem Ave. Sumter, SC with Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., Officiating
Family will be receiving friends at the home 145 A.L.G Road, Wedgefield, SC
