Obituary

On Christmas morning December 25, 2021, Pressley Harvin, Jr. quietly exchanged his earthly labor for his heavenly reward, at his residence in Alcolu, South Carolina. Pressley Harvin, Jr., son of Pressley Harvin, Sr. and the late Anne Stewart Harvin Rich, was born on March 4, 1970, in Sumter, South Carolina.

Pressley was a member of the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church where he accepted Christ as his personal savior at the age of 14. As a youth he served in various capacities such as Youth and Teens for Christ, Evangelism Ministry, Junior Usher Board, and especially the Youth Choir and MH Newton Mass Choir. As an exceptional instrumentalist, Pressley began playing the piano and organ for the church. He is well known as a faithful and talented musician with several churches and organizations in the community. He has served as Minister of Music at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist, New Hope RUME, Antioch RUME, Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist, Gum Springs Missionary, Society Hill AME, and New Bethel Baptist Church. Pressley was also the co-founder of the University of South Carolina Sumter Gospel Choir.

Educated in the public schools of Sumter County, Pressley was a 1988 graduate of Sumter High School, a 1990 graduate of Central Carolina Technical College with an AA degree in Criminal Justice and coursework in Paralegal Studies, a 1996 graduate of the University of South Carolina Sumter with an AA degree in Sociology. Pressley was an accomplished musician throughout school singing on the choir and as a brass instrumentalist with the band. His greatest moment in his musical career was performing on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York with the Sumter High Chorus.

As an adult, Pressley worked at Clarendon Special Needs and Disabilities Board, Clarendon County School District 2 as a Bus Driver and Substitute Teacher, Sumter School District 17, Sumter School District Early Head Start Program as the Transportation and Facilities Manager, Sumter School District as a School Bus Supervisor, and retired at Sumter School District as a Transportation Coordinator.

Pressley believed in community and demonstrated it by being involved in various organizations such as the University of South Carolina Alumni Association, Clarendon Branch of the NAACP, National Head Start Association, and former South Carolina Head Start Transportation Advisory Council. Pressley volunteered with the Sumter High School Marching Band and was also actively involved with Sumter County Parks and Recreation as a soccer, basketball, and football coach. Pressley loved to mentor youth he encountered, teaching them valuable life lessons built on the concept of God, family, education, sports/fine arts and community. His two favorite quotes where "Growing old is mandatory, Growing up is optional", and "Everything big, started out small, this includes your success and your mess!"

Pressley was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Stewart Harvin Rich.
