Mr. Porter Gaymon, 98 was the son of the late Fannie Burns Gaymon (Silas) and Elijah Walters. He was born on March 23, 1922 in Sumter, S.C. He departed this life on Saturday, December 19, 2020. He was united in wedlock to the late Ethel Dupree Gaymon. To this union six children were born: Loretta G. Black (Randolph) of Sumter, SC, Ernestine Gaymon of Sumter, SC, Alvin L. Gaymon (friend Imani) of Atlanta Georgia, Randolph Gaymon of Columbia, SC, two children which preceded him in death: Mary Lou Strudwick and Porter Gaymon, Jr.
Mr. Porter Gaymon was the last of his siblings. Preceding him in death were Taft Gaymon, Sr., Rosa Fullard, Virtus Rose, Silas Gaymon, Paul Gaymon, Arthur Walters, Manning Walters, Emma Walters Wortherly, Sarah Walters Wright, Gertie Walters Blairs, Cassie Walters Hoyt, Rosa Walters Butler, Lucille Gaymon Dwyer, Daisey Walters Hammond, Louvenia Gaymon Williams, Geneva Walters Hammond Scarborough, Rosabell Gaymon Vaughn, Ethel Gaymon, Johhny Lee Gaymon, and Willie James Gaymon.
Mr. Porter Gaymon worked as a Brick Mason for over seventy years affectionately known as Chief until his retirement. Entrepreneurship allowed him to establish Gaymon Masonry living up to the name Chief leading men into employment, training many brick masons in Sumter, S.C. Prior to Gaymon Masonry he worked at Georgia Pacific while attending Masonry School at Lincoln High School nightly in Sumter, SC. To provide for his family, he also pursed agriculture and hog farming. Gaymon Masonry was well known in Sumter County. Two local corporations that supported Gaymon Masonry throughout its existence are Sharp Construction and the Riley Company.
Gaymon Masonry successfully helped to build, the following places in Sumter County, and surrounding areas: The Rest Stop located on Interstate 20, Palmetto Tuomey Hospital, Big Jim's (Now Imperial), Santee Print, Jehovah Baptist Church, Jehovah Lifestyle Center, Mount Nebo Church, and Second Presbyterian Church just to name a few. Porter Gaymon was one of the oldest brick masons in Sumter County. He was a World War II Veteran who received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army and is one of the oldest World War II Veterans in Sumter, S.C. He was a lifetime member of Jehovah Baptist Church where he served as a trustee for sixty-seven years and was a member of the building committee until his health would not allow him to serve any longer.
In addition to his children, Mr. Porter Gaymon leaves to cherish his memory fifteen grandchildren: Tyrone Strudwick, Porter(Lottie) Strudwick, Laura(Michael) Strudwick Lewis, Frank(Lisa) Strudwick, Aaliyah(Thaddious) Goodman, Tauheedah(Yusef) Griffin, Quincy L.(Tesha) Black, Terverius (Shalena) Black, Tevishiah(Jimmy) Dinkins-Lucas, Antonio (Datra) Richardson , Adrian Gaymon, Aaron Gaymon, Jasmine Gaymon, Keosha Wilson, and Rashad Wilson; twenty six great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Daisy P. Gaymon; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and caretakers who loved and cared for him: Ms. Vanessa Burgess, Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Nurse Practitioners, and all the staff in Santee and Saluda Units at the Dorn VA Nursing Home.
