Obituary

Minister James Witherspoon was born on August 3, 1924 in Sumter, SC to the late Windson and Lela Witherspoon. He had a twin, John, who preceded him in death.

He met and married the love of his life, Elder Lillie Mark, in 1950; and to this union was born a beautiful daughter, Rovenia Witherspoon.

James attended Stone Hill School in Sumter, SC. After leaving Stone Hill, he moved to Baltimore, MD, where he was employed at the Shipyard. Once returning to Sumter, he was employed with several businesses. James retired from Sumter School District 17 in 2002.

Bro. James Witherspoon, as he was affectionately known, was a faithful member of St. Rest Holiness Church, where he served in the office of Minister, Deacon, and the Male Chorus. He loved to "Sit Down Servant." He was a dedicated servant of Jesus Christ until his death on Thursday, November 15, 2018 .

James leaves to mourn: his wife of sixty-eight years, Elder Lillie Witherspoon; one daughter, Rovenia Savage of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren, Takema and Ja'maicia Savage of Charleston, SC; three great-grandchildren: Ja'marcia, Savage Glover, Ja'Liyah Savage Proctor, and Jaleel Savage all of Charleston, SC; one brother, Dr. Erthlay Witherspoon of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-law, Azalle Grant and Millie A. Pretlow of Baltimore, MD; a stepmother-in-law, Evangelist Evelyn Mark of Maryland; four brothers-in-law: Dr. James Mark of San Antonio, TX, Samuel and Albertus Mark, and Amos Burgess all of Baltimore, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends.

James was preceded in death by his brothers, Windson and John; and a sister, Carrie.

Public Viewing will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.

Minister Witherspoon will be placed in the church on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at St. Rest Holiness Church 360 E Sumter Street Mayesville, SC 29104, with Bishop Tommie Doe Officiating and  Elder John Tart Presiding.

Interment will follow in Mayesville Community Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the home, 718 Estate Street Sumter, SC 29150.
