Obituary

Mattie Y. Gore, daughter of the late Shepherd York Sr. and Willie Mae York was born on April 20, 1946 in Lee County. After an extended illness, she peacefully departed this life surrounded by her loving family on September 17, 2017 at Palmetto Baptist, Columbia, SC.

Mattie was reared in her hometown of St. Charles, South Carolina and attended the public schools of Lee County. Later in life, she decided to move to New York. In 1964, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Sammie Lee Gore, from this union, they became the proud parents of one lovely daughter and two sons.

She became a member of Brownsville Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. She was employed with Brooklyn Water Department for many years. Mattie later decided to return to South Carolina and rejoined Unionville AME Church. Due health issues Mattie was unable to attend church on a regular basis. During this transition, she partnered with Grace Revolution where she kept the faith and praise God for all his blessings.

Mattie, affectionately known as "Mattie J" or "Nana" had a smile that would light up a room. She enjoyed being with her family and friends. No one could be sad around her because she had an encouraging, uplifting spirit. Mattie loved cooking and her specialty was soul food . When she knew someone liked a particular dish, she would prepare it for them. It was one of her ways she would show her love. No one was a stranger in her home. Mattie J also loved taking care of the elderly and gardening in her spare time.
