Obituary

Mary Lee Johnson Smith, wife of the late William Smith, Sr. and daughter of the late Jackson and Evelyn Johnson, was born on December 4, 1947 in Wedgefield, SC. She departed this life peacefully on April 17, 2018 at her home on Sumter County surrounded by her loved ones.

Mary attended the public schools in Sumter County. She later married the love of her life, Mr. William Smith, and served as a housewife up until the time of his unexpected death. Mary continued on as a single mom and her greatest joy in life was taking care of her four beloved sons and making sure they were well provided for.

Mary was a hard worker and enjoyed helping others in her community. She never complained or said no when asked to pitch in and help with a task. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was very passionate about gardening, cooking, and cleaning. Mary also enjoyed laughing and talking on the phone with her sisters and three sisters-in-law.

We will never forget her kindness, her gentleness, and the love that she shared with us all.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished by her three sons: William Smith, Jr., Carl Smith, both of the home, and David Smith of Sumter, SC; four sisters: Marie Gray of Plainfield, CT, Daisy (Cornelius) Clay of New London, CT, Irene (Pelzer) Goodwater of Holly Hill, SC, Gennett (Lawrence) Singleton of Sumter, SC; three brothers: Robert Lee Johnson of New London, CT, Michael (Carol) Johnson of Glasgow, KY, Booker T. Johnson of Sumter, SC; four sisters-in-law: Matilda Smith, Mary Lou (Frank) Maple, Mary E. Smith, and Betty Council of Sumter, SC; four grandchildren: Jermaine Hilton  Davyanna Smith, Cherelle Smith, and Angel Smith of Sumter, SC; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Rickey Lee Smith and a sister, Gladys Knox.

The Family would like to extend special thanks to her sister, Gennett Singleton, and the entire hospice team at Amedisys for providing her with excellent care throughout her illness and up until the time she took her last breath.
