Obituary

On January 16, 1928, God in his infinite wisdom delivered a miracle to the late Richard and Eva Burgess Goodman in the birth of their first child, Mary Lou. On August 16, 2021, God saw fit to redeem his beloved daughter on loan to us back to him.

Mary Lou, "Granny", Lou, Aunt Lou, Mrs. Dickey-joined Asbury United Methodist Church at an early age and served her God and her church faithfully until her death. She was recognized as Woman of the Year, The Phenomenal Woman, and honored for her 60 plus years as Musician for Asbury.

Mary Lou attended the public schools of Sumter County. She pursued her educational degree from Morris College, Sumter SC and continued with additional studies at South Carolina State College, Orangeburg SC. Her love for church, family and community would not allow her to remain idly at home upon her retirement from R.E. Davis Elementary (Sumter). She went back to work as a substitute for District 2 schools and joined the Shiloh Community Center (Lynchburg).

Mary Lou was married to the late Charles Spencer "Spank" Dickey. To this union one son was born, the late Lt. Richard Bowman Dickey. Richard in turn married the former Azilee DeeDee Blakeney Dickey and to this union two children were born: the late Michelle Chanise and Spec. Michael Dickey.

She was also preceded in death by her baby brother Jasper "Jap" Goodman who she adored.

Mary Lou leaves to cherish their memories of 43 years together -Azilee Dickey (Naomi and Ruth); Great Grandson Enrick Michael Dickey(Auburn Alabama); Granddaughter in law Emisha R. Dickey (Sumter SC), Foster son Terence McKnight, (Baltimore, MD); sister, Lottie Goodman Frierson,(Lynchburg SC); sister in law, Elease McKnight, (Washington, DC) and some very special nieces and nephews: Freddie McKnight, Bettie McKnight, Priscilla Goodman; Rev Ernest W. Frierson (Lynchburg SC), Anthony Frierson (Charlotte NC), and Ray Goodman (Sumter SC). Special cousins Margaret Hogan, Betty Mitchell and Thomasena Goodman (all of Lynchburg SC). She was loved by a host of other family and friends and always praised her friend and neighbor Ruth Mae Goodman for being there for her.
