Mrs. Maple Toney Rouse was born on June 16, 1930, the third child in a family of nine children to the late James L. And Marie Addison Toney of Lee County, SC
Maple Graduated from the public schools of Lee County and briefly attended Allen University before marrying the love of her life, Roy L. Rouse.
The couple lived in Colorado while Roy was in the Army before returning to South Carolina and settling down in Sumter, SC. To this union was born a Son, Lawrence.
Maple, affectionately known as "Mae" was employed for over 45 years as a domestic worker until she retired. During Mae's free time you could sometimes catch her sewing but mostly she concentrated on and will be remembered for her passion and accomplished ceramic artistry and Kiln operation. She made and shared with her family and friends prized ceramic pieces straight from the heart. Her greatest pride and joy however came from spending time with her 2 grandchildren whom she adored and could talk for hours about them.
Mae was born into and raised in the New Zion AME Church family, she accepted Christ and remained a faithful member serving as a member on the Senior Choir, the Mother's Club, Stewardess Board #10 and the Missionary Board #4 until she was no longer able to drive. She then attended services at Mt. Pisgah AME Church until her health failed.
Maple Toney Rouse transitioned on April 29, 2017 at Palmetto Healthcare Toumey at 1:25 am with her son and daughter in law at her side.
She leaves to cherish precious memories, a loving husband of 62 years Roy L. Rouse, a son Dr. Lawrence L. (Janie) Rouse Kenansville, NC, a grandson Lawrence Lee Rouse, Newport News, Va., a granddaughter Whitney J. Rouse, Greensboro, NC.
One sister, Carrie Wilson, Bishopville, SC, two brothers James(Ethel) Toney, Bishopville, SC and Jobe (Willie Mae) Toney, Columbia, SC, two brother in laws Marion (Ruby) Henry, Elliott, SC and Willie Lee Dowell Bishopville, SC. Two sister in laws Thelma Toney, Roselle NJ and Ada B. Toney Lynchburg SC, and a host of Nephews, Nieces and other relatives. The family also recognizes a special family friend Derrick Nelson of Sumter, SC.
Besides her parents, Maple was preceded in death by four sisters, Lela T. Bradley, Marie Prescott, Thelma Dowell and Elouise Tiller, two brothers, Lewis Toney and Lucious Toney.
Public Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 3-7pm at Job's Mortuary.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 1pm at New Zion AME Church, 78 Elliott Highway, Bishopville, SC 29010 with Pastor Rev. Archie Temoney, Officiating
Interment will follow in New Zion Memorial Gardens, Bishopville, SC
Family will receive friends at the home, 506 Jones Street, Sumter, SC 29150
