IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leon
Mccants
September 16, 1950 – April 9, 2021
Leon McCants, affectionately known as "Chuck" or "Huckabuck" by his siblings, and "Papi" by his grandchildren, was born September 16, 1950, to the late Deacon Frank McCants and Gladys Williams McCants. Leon departed his earthly life on Friday, April 9, at 10:26 a.m. at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Leon was the 2nd of six children and was raised in a Christian home where his parents taught and modeled the word of God.
Leon was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1969 graduate of Lincoln High School. He played Pony League Baseball at Bernie Circle and played football for Lincoln High School. Before graduating from high school, Leon learned to drive an 18-wheeler at the age of 16. Upon graduating from high school, Leon began his career as a transportation engineer. He worked as a transportation engineer for many years, but his passion was transporting household goods for military families. He took great pride in transporting and taking care of the household goods of military families, whom he greatly supported.
On September 5, 1970, Leon married his wife, Lauretha Anderson McCants. To this union, they had three beautiful children: the late Kevin McCants, Niesha (Derrick) Witherspoon, and Tiffany (Erick) Walters. Leon enjoyed driving long-haul and his career allowed him to travel across 48 states. His daughters admired his sense of direction and could call him whenever they were lost, and he could guide them back to any major highway without a roadmap. In his free time, Leon enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially while mowing the lawn, playing by the pool, and watching westerns. He also enjoyed taking them to McDonald's for an early morning breakfast.
At an early age, Leon became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church. In his early years, he sang on the Adult Choir and drove the church van for over 10 years, transporting parishioners to church every Sunday. Leon was also a Trustee.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Frank McCants, Jr. and Gladys Williams McCants, a son, Kevin McCants, a sister, Renee McCants.
Leon leaves to cherish his precious memory: a loving and devoted wife of fifty years, the Honorable Lauretha Anderson McCants; daughters, Niesha (Derrick) Witherspoon of Raeford, N and Tiffany (Eric) Walters of Sumter, SC, and three grandchildren he adored; Bryson Witherspoon, Landon Witherspoon, and Payton Walters. Brothers: Vincent (Beverly) McCants of Dallas, TX, Marshall (Marjorie) McCants of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; two sisters, Maggie (Ed) Baldwin of Brooklyn, NY, and Jacqueline McCants Dixon of Clinton, Maryland, and a host of sister-in-loves, brother-in-loves, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
