Obituary

Leeroney Calvin Frederick, affectionately known as L.C., was born October 17, 1939, in Dunbarton, South Carolina to Christine Garrett & Willie J. Frederick.  He entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.  Reared by Moses and Annie Bell Mitchell, he attended the public schools of Barnwell County, South Carolina.  A 1961 graduate of Kelly Edwards High School in Williston, L.C. excelled in academics, football and baseball.  Although he was a few years older than his sister, Mary Louise, they graduated the same year because he spent much of the school year sharecropping and bus-driving to help support the family.

After high school, he had a fortuitous opportunity to attend Morris College in Sumter, SC, where he majored in Mathematics and worked his way through school by driving for the college's president, Dr. O.R. Reuben, for four years.  In May of 1965, he graduated from Morris and that fall, under the encouragement of President Reuben, he entered Atlanta University (AU), where he earned his Masters of Business Administration in 1967.  While at AU, he met Carolyn Marie Brown and on December 18, 1966, they married in her hometown of Winnsboro, LA.

Following "The Plan," the two returned to Sumter where L.C. worked as Business Manager at Morris College for the next six years.  In 1973, L. C. left Morris College and went on to work as the Business Manager at Allen University in Columbia, SC and began selling mutual funds on the side.  After a few more years of selling mutual funds and then insurance on a part-time basis with American Bankers, he decided to start selling full-time under the name of Frederick & Associates, Inc., recruiting several agents over the years.  During his time with American Bankers, L.C. was named Executive Sales Director of the State of SC, only one of two African Americans holding that position in the company for nearly two decades (the other in the Virgin Islands). His financial planning/ insurance career afforded him the opportunity to represent various other financial companies including Waddell & Reed and LPL Financial.  With increased revenue, he expanded his business by investing in real estate and developing a home rental arm of his business.  As an experienced entrepreneur, L.C. counseled numerous others on the art of launching a business.

Committed to community uplift, he served faithfully as a trustee at First Baptist Missionary Church and as Vice-President of the Brown Lawson Housing Development Corporation, which established Shiloh-Randolph Manor.  In the wider community, he served on Sumter's Zoning Board and as Chairman of the Board of the Department of Social Services for over twenty years.  He was a longtime member of the Goodfellows Club of Sumter, the Morris College National Alumni Association and the Clark Atlanta National Alumni Association.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of fifty-six years, Carolyn; three daughters: Brenda (Al) Sept of Blackville, SC, Mary Fredereka (Kelvin) McDuffie of Atlanta, GA, and Marla (Eric) Frederick-Pristell of Atlanta, GA; two sisters: Elizabeth (Tony) Morton of Jonesboro, GA and Rosemary "Bootsy" Holt of Kissimmee, FL; two brothers: Benjamin (Betty Jean) Mixon of Aiken, SC and Earnest Brown of Decatur, GA.  He loved his grandchildren and they will miss him dearly!  Four granddaughters: Alkeah (Theo) Glover, Tatyana, Tamera and Talia McDuffie; two grandsons: COL Travis (Robin) Sept and Miles Pristell; and six great-grands: Nia, Jordan, Jalia, Imani, Kayla and Kyla.  In addition, he leaves to mourn his loss and celebrate his memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
