On December 16, 2017, in Fort Riley, Kansas, God plucked another loving soldier for his garden in heaven. Sgt. First Class Kevin Johnson was born November 11, 1971 in Sumter, SC to Ada Mae Wells and the late Robinson (Beck) Webb. He was the stepson of Charlie Wells.
Kevin received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating from Sumter High School in 1990. He loved athletics and played on the football, basketball, and wrestling teams. He learned the value of good work ethics while in high school and worked for Tom Kirven Farms. Additionally he joined the ROTC during his high school years. In his twelfth grade year, he joined the Army Reserves. After graduation he worked for Florence Concrete of Sumter.
Before accepting his military assignment in April, 1993, Kevin married Sheila Blair Johnson. Kevin served his country with dignity as a member of the U.S. Army. His oversees tours of duty included South Korea in 1998; Kuwait in 2002; Iraq in 2003, 2007 and 2010; and again to South Korea in 2016. Kevin was stationed at Fort Riley in September, 2014. Kevin was an artillery mechanic.
Kevin's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Meritorious Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Certificate of Achievement, Driver and Mechanic Badge, a Driver and Mechanic with Driver — Wheeled Vehicles and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver — Tracked Vehicles.
Kevin knew that a spiritual foundation was imperative, and on one of his visits home, he was baptized in the name of Jesus at St. James Holiness Church, under the leadership of Pastor Alfreda Johnson. He enjoyed reading his Bible and learning what it took to please the Lord.
Kevin leaves to cherish memories his wife, Sheila Blair Johnson; three stepsons, Anthony Blair, Adrian (Robin) Blair, and Ron (Crystal) Blair all of Atlanta, GA; his mother and stepfather, Ada Mae and Charlie Wells; two sisters, Jennie Mae Bennett of Washington, DC and Stephanie Ann Johnson of Sumter, SC; three brothers, Steven M. (Felecia)) Johnson of Sumter, SC, Warren Webb and Jimmy Webb of Washington, DC; three aunts, Susie (Kenneth) Smith of Elizabeth Kentucky, Katie Baker, and Gail Shaw of Sumter, SC; three uncles, Deacon Curtis (Eva Mae) Johnson, Jimmy Green, and Johnny Jordan all of Sumter, SC.; three grand-aunts, Elizabeth "Bessie" Myers Johnson of Sumter, SC, Fannie Rumph of Columbia, SC, and Amanda Johnson of Fort Washington, MD; his mother-in-law, Shirley Blair of Sumter, SC; one brother-in-law, John Michael Blair of Sumter, SC; a very special cousin reared in the home Isle Greene. Kevin was also blessed to have eleven step-grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews, many cousins, other relatives and friends, including his U.S. military family.
In addition to his father, was preceded in death by his grandparents, Johnny and Mary James Johnson and Charlie and Everlina Webb; two brothers, David Webb and Harvey Webb; two sisters, Betty Bennett and Ethel Webb; Seven uncles, Johnny Lee Shaw, Harry Lee Shaw, Jackie Baker, Solomon Henry Johnson, Cartell Webb, James Webb, Charlie Webb, Jr.; eight aunts, Rosa Lee Johnson, Loretta Johnson Greene, Annette Johnson Joyner, Lou Ida Cooper, Ora Lee Sumpter, Janie Webb, Rosa Singleton, and Ella Washington; and a cousin reared in the home, Catherine Spain.
Public Viewing will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 3-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
SFC Johnson will be placed in the church on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 12 noon for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Westend Community Church, 101 S. Salem Ave., Sumter, SC 29150, Pastor Alfreda Johnson, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Congruity Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gable, SC.
Family will be receiving friends at 11 Idaho Dr., Sumter, SC.
