IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John I.
Geter, Sr.
September 1, 1950 – February 5, 2018
John Isaac Geter, Sr. transitioned to be with our Lord on February 5, 2018. He was born to the late Will Geter, Sr. and Wilhelmenia Furman Geter in Sumter, South Carolina, on September 1, 1950. He was the third of six children born to his parents.
John was educated in the Sumter County Public School System and graduated from Lincoln High School class of 1968. Some of his most memorable moments were being with his fellow classmates at local events and class reunions.
John met the love of his life, Gloria Williams Geter in 1978. The two of them became one in 1981. John had unconditional love for his wife. He knew Proverbs 18:22 says "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord." He modeled the biblical principle of loving his wife as Christ loved the Church. He displayed his deep affection for Gloria with undeniable love. He enjoyed spending time with his wife as they traveled to many destinations throughout this country and the Caribbean.
John was the proud father of three sons; Tony Andre, John Isaac, Jr., and Ragin Lamont. He was an exceptional example of what a great father should look like. He devoted quality time with his sons; teaching them to fish, play golf, and participate in scouting and martial arts. He leaves a great legacy for the entire family of being a better person to all he touched.
John had a tireless work ethic. He was determined to provide for the needs of his family. He worked many long hours for many years at Exide Battery as both an employee and supervisor. When the company closed the Sumter plant, John retrained himself to be a Corrections Officer for the State of South Carolina Department of Corrections. As a Corrections Officer, John earned the respect of his colleagues and many other professionals. Prior to his retirement, he served as a guard for inmates who were patients at The Palmetto Tuomey Medical Center. Many of the medical professionals noted that John was a perfect gentleman who genuinely cared for others.
John enjoyed fishing, bowling, and most of all golf. He worked on his proficiency at the game of golf and became known as one of the best golfers in the state, earning the title of Senior Golf Champion at the Beech Creek Club.
John received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age. He was determined to worship. He would get up early on Sundays for worship at Jehovah Baptist Church, ensuring that he worshiped before enjoying golf with his friends. When he became ill, he continued to worship consistently.
John's Christian witness enabled him to be a major influence in his community. His neighbors valued him as their neighbor and friend. While John and Gloria traveled to Houston on numerous medical trips, the neighbors ensured that their house was covered with protection. John never said anything bad about others and they never heard anybody say anything bad about him; he mastered the power of the tongue, a great man!
John leaves a legacy of family and friends, including his loving and devoted wife Gloria Geter of Sumter; three exceptional sons: Tony Andre (Christine) Geter of Gainesville, VA, John Isaac(Vienna) Geter, Jr.,and Ragin Lamont Geter of Riverside CA; one brother, Ronald Geter of Wilmington, NC; two loving sisters Dr. Gloria (James) Graham of Wallace, NC, Willie Mae Geter McDowell of Alexandria, VA, sister-in-law JoAnn W. Brown (Samuel) of Sumter, SC; one granddaughter, Stephanie and grandson, John Isaac III; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
