Obituary

A father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and an uncle. His life began 77 years ago, through which he touched and inspired a family that loved, honored and cherished him

Jervia Alston was birth as the second child to the late Ryttenburg Altson, Sr. and Janie Singleton Alston on February 14, 1941 in Sumter, SC. He departed this life on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Palmetto Health Tuomey, Sumter, SC. Jervia was married to the late Ida Mae Choice Alston. To that union, they were blessed with two sons. He was reared in Sumter County, where he attended the public schools.

His favorite pass time was sitting in his recliner watching TV: CNN and the News. He was also famous for saying some old time words like, "fair-to-middling" and "tolerable." In his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball.

To Jervia, being a Christian meant showing it through his daily walk of life. At an early age, he joined the High Hills Missionary Baptist Church. Jervia was deeply involved church auxiliaries, which allowed him to become a very active, dedicated and faithful Trustee.

Jervia was employed by as a Heavy Equipment Operator and Construction Worker with Avery Lumber Company, Brown and Martine Construction Company.

Those left to cherish his fond memories and witness his homegoing: two sons, Jervia Jemol (Katrina) Alston of Horatio, SC and Shawn Tyrone (Vinetta) Alston of Dalzell, SC; three grandchildren: Camille Cunningham of Nashville, TN, JerAsia and JerNiya Alston of Horatio, SC; four step-grandchildren: LaQuetta, Shawn, Lakyshia, and Roosevelt all of Sumter, SC; great-granchildren; three brothers: Nelson Alston of Albrightville, PA, Samuel (Shirely) Alston of Perth Amboy, NJ, Samuel C. "James" (Shirley) Alston of Dalzell, SC; two sisters, Minnie L. (George) Thomas and Harriett Alston both of Dalzell, SC; one sister-in-law, Queen Mack of Wedgefield, SC; one brother-in-law, William "Pete" Prayleau of Temple Hill, MD; three aunts: Mary S. Prioleau and Martha S. Prioleau both of Dalzell, SC and Albertha Singleton of Bronx, NY; one godchild, Corbin Whittfield of Boston, MA; three life-long friends: Earnest Ricks, James Shannon, and Ervin Richardson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ryttenburg Alston, Jr. and Andrew "George" Alston; one sister, Ida Mae Prayleau; grandparents, Nelson and Rosa B. Singleton and Harriett Brown; six uncles; five aunts; five sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

Public Viewing will be held on Friday, July 20, 2018 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.

Mr. Alston will be placed in the church on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at High Hill Baptist Church 6750 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, SC 29040, with Pastor Donald Amis Officiating, assisted by Rev. Willie Dennie, Rev. Dr. Katie Roach, Rev. Robert McDuffie, Rev. Wallace Preaston, Rev. Keith Mays, and Rev. Derrie L. Grant

Interment will follow in High Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
