James "Toot" AKA Jimmy Chatman, was born on May 9, 1943 to the late David and Sally Riley Chatman Sr. in Clarendon County. He departed this life on Friday, December 15, 2017 at his residence.
He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter County.
In his early years of life, he was a member of Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, SC, where he served on the Trustee Board. Later, moving his membership to Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.
Jimmy was the number one car salesman in Sumter for over 42 years in selling cars. He worked for several car dealerships to include: Roy Timmons as a car washer, Robert E. Lee Chrysler Plymouth as a Car Salesmen, and Newsome Car Dealership in Camden, SC as a Car Salesman. In 1978, God blessed him with his own business as the owner of C&C Motors, after C&C Motors he started working at Jim Braham for several years and later moving his employment to Midstate Imports where he worked for number of years until his health began to fail.
Jimmy was united in Holy Matrimony in 1965 to Dorothy Baldwin Chatman for 25 years, to this union they were blessed with two daughters. He later married Cecilia Hernandez from 2002 to 2009.
Jimmy is survived by his children; Terence Tomlin of Darlington, SC, Valeria (Randy) Chatman Scott, Velisa Chatman Ward bot of Columbia, SC and Timothy (Mildred) Tyrone Kelly of Sumter, SC; siblings, David Chatman of Sumter, SC, Emma Chatman of Brooklyn, NY, Inez Chatman of Sumter, SC, Edward Chatman of Sumter, SC, Sallie C. (Charles) Burns of Atlanta, GA, Patricia Chatman of Sumter, SC, Franklin Chatman of Sumter, SC, Janice (Lorenzo) McCleary of Sumter, SC, Jeanette Hernandez of Newark, NY and Michael T. (Carolyn) Chatman of Sumter, SC; grandchildren, Portia (Ronderick) James, Emmanuel Glenn Franklin, Terence Tomlin II, Alana A. Tomlin, Kaylen F. Tomlin, Derek Latimer, Jerome Latimer, Crystal Latimer, Chris Pugh and Latita Monroe; one aunt, Lucille Chatman of Tampa, FL; three great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
Public Viewing will be held on Friday.Dec. 22 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. Chatman will be placed in the church on Sat. at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Service will be held on SatDecember23, 2017at11am at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter with Pastor Marion H. Newton, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Family will be receiving friends at 1306 Covent Garden Drive, Sumter, SC.
