Georgia Addison Commander, age 91, departed this earthly life on December 9, 2017 at the National Health Care Facility in Sumter, South Carolina. She was born to the late Sampson Addison and Lela Addison on April 30, 1926 in Lynchburg, South Carolina.

Georgia was educated in the public school system of Lee County and was active in the community – mostly notably her involvement with the church. At an early age, she joined the Unionville AME Church where her family had been active and served in several capacities including Stewardess Board #2 (vice chairwoman), Usher Board and Senior Choir.

Listening to and singing gospel songs and hymns was an activity she greatly enjoyed both inside and outside of the church.

She met, fell in love and was married to fellow Lee County resident, the late Robert (Skelly) Commander on September 22, 1946. From that union, they had four (4) children which they raised and educated in the nearby community/school system. They both enjoyed the Sunday afternoon family dinners where she and Robert were known for their richly cooked food. Despite her fear of worms and frogs, Georgia and Robert could often be found at one of the nearby rivers or lakes fishing – an activity they both enjoyed.

Family, friends and fashion were Georgia's passion. In addition to fishing, she enjoyed planting flowers for her garden, sewing, fostering cats and both dressing up in the latest fashions and admiring such on others.

Georgia leaves to cherish her memories - one dear sister, Corine Bradley, daughter Beverly Ann Watkins, step daughter Mary Ann Wilson, sons Robert Leroy (Sandra) Commander, Jerry (Doris) Commander, and step son Edmond "Shine" (Tina) Wilson, two sister-in-laws Jannie May Wilson and Lucille Damon. She has eight grandchildren, one great grandson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Georgia also had an "adopted" family Mr. and Mrs. Booker T (Dorothy) Fortune and special friends Mrs. Geneva Hudson and Mrs. Bessie Wilson.
In addition to her husband, she was proceeded in death by her father and mother, Sampson and Lelia Addison, one daughter Georgia Scarborough, one deceased daughter in-law Thelma P. Commander, deceased siblings, Oscar (OC) Addison, Marie Toney, Carrie Richardson, Smith Addison, Alice Terell, Sampson Addison Jr., Beanna Wilson, sister-in-laws Josephine Hudson, Annie Lee Damon, Mary Mathis, Mattie Isaac, brother-in lawsLeroy Damon, Flex Damon, Herbert Damon and John Commander.

Public Viewing will be held on Wed. Dec 13, 2017 from 2-6pm.

Funeral Service will be held on Thurs. Dec 14 at 1pm at Unionville AME Church with Pastor Alvin Webb.

Interment will follow in Unionville AME Church Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at 64 Lynam Rd., Sumter, SC 29150.
