Frances Dubose
Singleton
September 29, 1939 – September 1, 2022
The life of Frances D. Singleton came to an end on September 1, 2022, at Prisma
Health in Sumter, SC.
Born in Sumter on September 29, 1939, Frances was the youngest of six children born
to the late Eliza A. DuBose.
Educated in Sumter, she was an honor graduate from Lincoln High School and received
an A.B. degree cum laud in English from Morris College and an M.A. in English from
Atlanta University.
Frances' religious convictions came early when she joined Second Presbyterian Church
at the age of nine. She became very active in the Sunday school and youth group and
as an adult, attended meetings of the Presbytery and Synod and later represented the
Presbytery as a lay commissioner during several years. She served as the clerk of
session at the Second Presbyterian Church for forty-two years.
Her teaching career in the public schools began with a three-year stint in Beaufort, SC
then she spent the next thirty-six years in Sumter County schools. After her retirement
she became an adjunct professor of English at Morris College and USC Sumter.
Frances developed an affinity for creative writing rather late in life that eventually
motivated her to engage in poetry writing with a poem being published in a national
anthology. Later, she self-published two books of her poetry.
Her survivors include her loving husband, King David of 56 years; twin daughters, Evita
S. (Isaac) McQueen, Columbia, SC and Anita C. Singleton, Slidell, LA; Sonya L.
Singleton, Columbia, SC, and Natalie S. (Shawn) Gordon, Greenville, SC; eight
grandchildren: Angelique L. (Jonathan) Watson, Marcus Singleton, Adolfo and Jelani
McQueen, Brittni H. (Emmanuel) Brown, Ashli Generette, Jamari and Jalen Gordon;
seven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and
friends.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jerome E. DuBose
and sisters Sarah D. Toney, Dorothy R. Chambers Jessie R. Garnette and
Amy D. Boney.
Frances was a very firm believer in sharing one's God given gifts to His honor
and glory. Let no one stop you from helping others.
