Emma Polk Brailsford was born on December 22, 1936 to the late William Sr. and Rosa Lee Polk. She departed this earthly life on September 7 th 2018 at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
Emma was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1956. Upon graduating, Emma sought new opportunities and relocated to New York City. Never turning back, Emma gained employment with the W.F.R. Ribbon Company, there she found delight in her work and remained employed with the company for 55 years.
As a devout Christian, Emma's childhood was faithfully spent at Brown Chapel Union Methodist Episcopal Church. In her adult life, Emma's Christian journey continued and she became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York, where she served as a member of the Missionary Ministry.
Emma was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie Brailsford. Though no children were born of this union. Emma took great pride in caring for her younger siblings. Emma's love for her family and the New York Mets was unwavering, but her love for God was greater.
Special love and care was given through her illness by her two faithful and devoted niece and nephew, Vanessa Singleton and James D. Kelly.
Emma leaves to cherish her memories; six sisters: Noreen P. James, Annie P. Walters, Christine P. Kelly, all of Sumter, SC, Julia P. Boston, Martha P. Singleton of Brooklyn, NY., Carrie P. Canty of Irvington, NJ; two brothers, Christopher (Catherine) Polk of Pinewood, SC. and William (Berurene) Polk of Harrisburg, NC; one brother in-law, James Kelly of Sumter, SC., several loving nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Willie; her parents William Sr. and Rosa Lee and her sister Mary P. Pleasant.
Public Viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Brailsford will be placed in the church on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 12noon for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center 101 S. Salem Avenue Sumter, SC, with Pastor Ricky Ricky Simmons Officiating, and Pastor Denzel J. Hampton, Eulogist.
Interment will follow in Brown Chapel UME Church Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at the home of her sister, 717 Maney Street Sumter, SC.
