Homegoing Celebration

"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." Proverbs 31:10

Journey Began

Dorothy Mae Porter Singleton, wife of Moses Singleton Sr. was born on September 21, 1948 in Dalzell, SC to the late John Sr.  & Dorethia T. Porter. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Dorothy was a 1967 graduate of Ebenezer High School. She was an avid basketball player and excelled in the sport, winning several trophies. She was also a dedicated bus driver who could handle that bus like a race car driver. She along with her cousin, Frances Abrams are probably the reasons why they put governors on the buses. She also would let Moses drive the bus so he could get his driver's license.

She joined Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church and accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. She was baptized at First United Pentecostal Holiness Church. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23, in which she confessed daily.

In her high school years, she met Moses Singleton, who became the love of her life. They dated for quite a while. When Moses left high school to go to work, they began to  write love letters to one another. Moses eventually went to work with her dad on the Bridges, and after graduation from high school, Moses and Dorothy were married on June 17, 1967. To this union they had three beautiful daughters, Janeice, Linda & Lisa and one amazing son, Moses Jr.. Dorothy loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally.

Dorothy along with the love of her life Moses, built their lives on a solid foundation, which stood for 56 years. Moses joined her as a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church and their journey began together with Christ as their center of their lives.

She became employed at Becton Dickinson where she was a faithful employee for 31 years.

Moses and Dorothy both retired after 86 combined years in the work force. Dorothy's hobbies were shopping, going out to eat with Moses and family, dancing with her grandchildren, family vacations and working in the yard with her plants, that "Moey" couldn't throw away even if they were dying. The two of them would frequently go out to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Journey's End

Honey, you left this world so suddenly without a chance for me to say goodbye. We knew heaven needed another angel and this time it was you. You've left us with great memories in our hearts and that's where they will always be. If Dorothy could speak a word to you today she would say, "My family, It's in your heart!" Keep it there. God gave me 75 years to complete my assignment and my journey has come to an end.

On Sunday evening she received an invitation to a family reunion. This celebration she would have to travel alone. Her journey has now taken her to a place where she'll rejoice with her mom and dad, brothers, aunts, uncles, and her mother & father-in law.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving husband of 56 years, Moses Singleton Sr. Three daughters; Janeice, Linda, and Lisa. One son, Moses Jr. (Monica), all of Sumter, SC. 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, two special grandsons, Shane Dennis (who was raised in the home) and Robert English Jr.. Four sisters; Mable Oaks, Helen Woods, Annette Pitts and Nevetta (Anthony) McKnight, all of Sumter, SC. Four brothers; John (Mary) Porter, Willie (Lakeisha) Porter, Donald Porter, and Steve (Gwendolyn) Porter, all of Sumter, SC. Two aunts; Fannie Mae Mickens, Newark, NJ, and Mable (J.P) Abrams, both of Sumter, SC. Eight sister-in laws; Minnie Ruth Grant, Deaconess Patricia (Deacon James) Shaw, Iris Abrams, Priscilla Lewis, Evangelist Lacie (Pastor Frederick) Pressley, all of Sumter, SC,  Teresa (Charles) Mouzon, Columbia, SC,  Marie Singleton, and  Loretta Singleton, both of Sumter, SC and one brother in-law, John (Patricia) Singleton, Sumter, SC. A Silent Tear

By Gaynor Llewellyn

Just close your eyes and you will see

All the memories that you have of me

Just sit and relax and you will find

I'm really still there inside your mind

Don't cry for me now I'm gone

For I am in the land of song

There is no pain, there is no fear

So dry away that silent tear

Don't think of me in the dark and cold

For here I am, no longer old

I'm in that place that's filled with love

Known to you all, as "UP ABOVE"
