Obituary

Dorothy "Dot" Hopkins daughter of the late Matthew Ballard Sr. and Addie (Canty) Ballard, was born on October 16, 1943 in Sumter, South Carolina where she grew up and attended school. Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 4:39 am at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

Dorothy worked on various jobs: as a waitress and a cook at Royal Rib House; owned and operated her restaurant, Dorothy Kitchen - she enjoyed cooking since the age of eight; certified Home Attendant; and Night Supervisor for Wells Fargo which she retired from. Dorothy enjoyed spending time in church and served as usher, nurse, and was on the deaconess board. She also enjoyed reading the bible and being with her family and friends.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Ernest Hopkins on August 28, 1982. They shared 35 years of marriage. She was previously married to Damon "Buck" Williams on February 27, 1962 and bore eight children.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Ernest Hopkins; eight children: David Frank Ballard of Sumter, South Carolina; Catherine L Williams of Sumter, South Carolina; Shirley Ann Williams of Brooklyn, New York; Dyreatha (Lee) Hill, of Stroudsburg Pennsylvania, Loretta Williams of Brooklyn, New York; Carolyn Williams of Conyers, Georgia; Steven (Wanda) Williams of Brooklyn, New York; Abson "Gregory" Ballard; six step children: Ernette Hopkins, Damon Hopkins, Tye Hopkins, Ernest Hopkins Jr., Rose Hopkins, and Pete Hopkins; 29 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; 10 brothers and sisters: Matthew (Vanessa) Ballard Jr. of Guyton, Georgia; Shirley I Williams of Sumter, South Carolina; William (Julia) Ballard of Sumter, South Carolina; David Ballard of Sumter, South Carolina; Jake Ballard of Sumter, South Carolina; Annette (Robert) Howard of Waynesville, Missouri; Stephanie Chavous of Brooklyn, New York; Michael Chavous of Brooklyn, New York; Jeffrey (Tameka) Chavous of Brooklyn, New York; Jacenda (Lamont) Johnson of Brooklyn, New York; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her son: Roosevelt Williams; step son Ronald Hopkins; her parents; one sister, Lila Mae Bennett; Five brother-in-laws: Alphonso Bennett Jr. ; Isaiah Williams, Jr.; William Hopkins; John Edward Hopkins; Joe Lewis Hopkins.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 10am at Orangehill AME Church, 3035 S Highway 261, Wedgefield, SC 29168 with Rev. Lemuel Washington, Officiating.

Interment will follow in Allen Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
