Obituary

Dorothy M. Holland departed this earthly life on Friday, December 16, 2016 at her residence in Sumter, South Carolina. She was born July 22, 1940 in Sumter County to the late Genie and Marie Martin James (White).
Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated with the Lincoln High School class of 1959. She was a devoted member of St. James United Methodist Church, where she sang on the Senior Choir, served on the Usher Board, and member of the United Methodist Women Organization. She was a member of the Sumter Chapter Federation of the Blind and she also was a private caregiver.
Dorothy was the former wife of Sylvester G. Holland, Sr., and to their union four children were born. She was employed at Campbell Soup Company for 26 years, until her retirement. Dorothy was known for her straightforward, honest and outspoken way of telling it like it is, as well as her class, style, conscientiousness, cooking and homemaking skills. She also loved old school music, watching westerns on television, and talking on the telephone.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are two daughters, Valerie D. Holland (Jimmie L. Coplin) of Sumter, South Carolina, Kimberly (Antoine) Holland-Washington of Greensboro, North Carolina; and two sons, Sylvester G. Holland, Jr. (Army Veteran) of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Terry M. (Krisander) Holland (Marine Veteran) of Sumter, South Carolina. Also left to treasure memories of Dorothy are her sister, Geraldine (Harry "Jerry") Gerideau; and three brothers, William "Bubba" (Carol) James, and Granderson "Bro" James of Sumter, South Carolina; and Frank (Betty) James of Lynchburg, South Carolina; nine grandchildren, Travis Issac; Sylvester G. Holland, III; Brandon Holland; Sgt. Steven M. (Dasha) Graves; Terika Holland; Amber Washington; Kaysia Holland; Amaya Washington; and Branay Washington; 15 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and special friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Genie James, Jr., and two affectionate and loving aunts, Minnie Deas and Ruth James Martin.
Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Holland will be placed in the church on Friday at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday December 23, 2016 at 11am at St. James United Methodist Church, Sumter with Pastor Cheryl Johnson, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Family will be receiving friends at the home, 39 Reese Street, Sumter
