Doris Yvonne Dennis Gibson, was born on May 17, 1946 in Sumter, S.C. She departed this life on July 31, 2016 at East Cooper Medical Center, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Doris was the daughter of the late Daniel Edward Dennis and Mazie Keith Bolling. She was raised by the late Alfred Bolling.
She was a graduate of Allen High School in Asheville, NC, Fayetteville State University, Bronx Community College and attended New York Presbyterian Hospital of Psychiatry.
Doris was an entrepreneur. She operated Carvel's Ice Cream for 15 years and catered the Apollo theater. Doris loved and cared for others, she was an assistant administrator for Riverdale Manor Home for Adults for over 14 years. She also was a drug and alcohol counselor. Doris was also a case manager for the homeless.
Upon returning home, Doris worked with the South Carolina Department of Corrections, The Mentor program of SC. Doris most rewarding job was at New Horizon Family Center under Clemson University. She was a House mother to many young mothers and their children.
While in New York Doris was affiliated with Emmanuel AME Church. Once she returns home she reunited with Wayman Chapel and became involved with New Light Baptist Church of Summerton, SC.
She leaves to cherish her memory; one daughter, Joanna (Nick) Brown; two grandchildren Xavier Robinson and Ahmad Brown; a brother Melvin (Louise) Keith; a sister Thelma (Will) Vasser; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Howard, Ophelia Howard and Mary Gardner; a beloved nephew, Patrick Howard; special niece Deborah Kea; very special friends, Marian Curry, Sandra Beras, Trent Ladson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and step father, maternal and paternal grandparents, two brothers, Leroy and Harold Howard and two nephews, Rev. Ronald W. Howard and Harold Howard III.
Public Viewing will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Gibson will be placed in the church on Tuesday at 10:00am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00am at Wayman Chapel AME Church, with Pastor Dennis Broughton, Officiating
Family will be receiving friends at 1531 Peach Orchard Road, Sumter
