April 22, 1927 – August 2, 2018
In the peace and quietness of the early morning of August 02, 2018, God summoned Doretia Tucker Porter to come home. In a twinkle of an eye, she transitioned away from this earthly life. God has taken her to a wonderful place, where she'll eternally reside with much peace, joy, and contentment.
Doretia T. Porter was born in Sumter, South Carolina on April 22, 1927 to the late Essie Tucker. She received her education from in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, Doretia accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Mt. Olive A.M.E church, in Woodrow, South Carolina. She was a faithful member and wore many hats at Mt. Olive. She served as the Pastors' aide President, Advisor of Junior Usher, Advisor of Inspirational Choir, Steward, Class leader #6, a member of the missionary, and played in many plays until a decline in her health. She walked in the ways of the Lord, designed her life through Christ, and she was the epitome of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31. She was a devoted and loving mother to her family as well as the community. She was full of wisdom and loved fellowshipping with family and friends.
Doretia T. Porter was married to the late, John Porter, Sr, for 45 years and through this union they had 12 children. Her memories will be cherished and carried on through her five daughters: Mabel Oaks, Dorothy (Moses) Singleton, Helen Woods, Annette Pitts and Nevetta (Anthony) McKnight; four sons, John (Mary) Porter, Willie (Keisha) Porter, Donald Porter and Steve ( Gwen) Porter all of Sumter, SC; one foster son, David Taylor, Jr. of Sumter, SC; two sisters, Mabel (JP) Abrams of Sumter, SC, Fannie (Hall) Mickens of Irvington, NJ; one sister in law; Nancy Porter of Sumter, SC; 46 grandkids, 75 great grandkids, and 25 great great grandkids. And a host of nephews and nieces.
She preceded in death by three sisters, Earlese Tucker Holmes, Frances Abrams, and Lillie Mae Tucker-Rogers; one brother, John Henry Tucker; three sons, Arthur Porter, Sr, Solomon Porter and Bobby Porter; three brother-in-laws and two son-in-laws.
Public Viewing will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Ms. Porter will be placed in the church on Monday, Aug. 6 at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Service will be held on Mon. Aug. 6 at 11am at Mt. Olive AME Church, Woodrow, SC with Pastor Rev. Dr. Friendly Gadson, Eulogist and Pastor Dorothy Maple, Officiating .
Interment will follow in Mt. Olive AME Memorial Gardens.
Family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Helen Woods 3565 Hwy 15 North Sumter, SC 29153 AND 3381 Ebenezer Road, Sumter, SC 29153 2-8 PM.
