Charles New, husband of Viola Graves New and oldest child of the late Joe and Sadie New, was born on October 20, 1923 in McCormick, SC.
He attended the McCormick County Public Schools. In his teen years, he relocated to Sumter, SC, with intent on providing for his family, and embarked upon a construction career. He worked for Boyle Construction for 30 plus years in Sumter, where he contributed to the initial plan of designing many highways. Later in life, Charles discovered a love for antique and became the owner of "The Antique Shop" on Liberty Street in Sumter, which then relocated to the Sumter Flea Market.
Charles was affiliated with Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years.
On August 30, 2019, Charles saw the light and departed this life at his residence.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 68 years, Viola Graves New of the home; one son, Corey Centel Pendergrass of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren: Brandy Nicole Paige, Ayanna Semira Pendergrass, and Bella Santel P. White; one great-grandchild, Brandon Isaiah Golston; a sister-in-law, Maggie Woodberry of Chicago, IL; a daughter-in-love, Pastor Minerva L. (Randolph) Paige; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by a sister, Laura "Mae" Palmer; four brothers: Robert, James, and Clarence New, and M. L. Mims; and two brothers-in-law, Jessie Palmer and Heyward Graves.
Public Viewing will be held on Friday, September 6, 2019 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. New will be placed in the church on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 2pm for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held at 3pm on September 7, 2019 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church 805 South Harvin Street Sumter, SC 29150, with Pastor Marion H. Newton, Eulogist and Minister Ethel Johnson Presiding.
Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends at the home, 115 Highland Avenue Sumter, SC 29150.
Job's Mortuary, Inc., 312 S. Main Street is in charge of arrangements.
