Obituary

The patriarch of the Grant family, B J "Bunk" Grant was a teacher, provider, and confidante to his many family members and friends. B J was born on January 4, 1938 in Bishopville, S.C. to Daisy Charles-Grant and James Grant Sr. B J split his formative years between going to school and assisting his family. Although he ended his formal education at an early age, he was a life-long scholar and taught himself multiple crafts and trades. A man of many talents, B J was an avid fisherman, skilled cook, and talented horticulturalist. He eventually passed on his extensive skill set and knowledge to his children and grandchildren.

He departed this life on Saturday, March 10, 2018, in Wedgefield, S.C.

B J left the comforts of his home at the age of 18 to start a life in Brooklyn, N.Y. He worked a myriad of odd jobs to include selling clothes and running a printing press for a publications company. He met and married Betty Jean Carter, who preceded him in death. Collectively they formed a family of six children: Cynthia, Pamela, Lisa, Gail, Regina, and Charles Ray. B J would eventually return to his South Carolinian roots establishing a home in Wedgefield, S.C. He spent his golden years with his best friend and life partner Dorcas Williams. On any given day they could be found together enjoying each other's time, spirit, and company.

Hard work was not foreign to B J Grant. Besides rehabbing and refurbishing multiple properties and tending to his garden, he also worked at Hopewell Nursing Home and retired from Wilson Hall School. Never one to sit idly, he spent his spare time fishing or with his grand and great grand children.  He was well-known in the community for his big heart and could be found assisting his friends and family throughout out the neighborhood.  In retirement he would take friends to run errands, transport family members to appointments, and lend a listening ear.

He was a true southern gentleman always placing the needs of his family before his own. He was known for his quick wit and honest candor.  You knew you were going to get a life lesson in B J 101 when he started a conversation with his signature phrase: "I ain't arguing with you, I'm just talking to you…" Although always honest, his guidance was packaged with love, his signature smirk, and a touch of humor.

In 2016, He gave his life to the lord and savior and became a member of Willow Grove AME Church.

B J was an honest, forthright, and humble man who deeply cared for his family and others. He leaves to cherish his memories his life partner, Dorcas Williams of Sumter, S.C.; brother, Mark Bradley of Bishopville, S.C.; sister, Loretta Frison of Alexandria, Va.; six children: Cynthia (Eddie) Jackson of Bishopville, S.C., Pamela Grant of Sumter, S.C., Lisa (Otis) Richardson of Sumter, S.C., Gail Carter of Birmingham, Ala., Regina Carter of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Ray Carter of Birmingham, Ala.; 12 grandchildren - Tasha (Emmitt) Williams of Bishopville, S.C., Michael Grant of Atlanta, Ga., Marsha (Shawn) Capers of Sumter, S.C., Loretta Jackson of Bishopville, S.C., Philip (Koy) Grant of Sumter, S.C., Maurice (Crystal) Grant of Sumter, S.C., Brandon Carter of Atlanta, Ga., Timisha and Quenton (Shank) Bracey of Sumter, S.C., Kiara, Trevaughn and Jakima Low of Sumter, S.C.; and 16 Great-Grandchildren: Shyquavius, Davion, Ny'Keema, Ny'Asia, Ny'Kerria, Michael Jr., Cameron, Tyrion, Savion, Lauren, Madison, Braylon, Taylor Brielle, TaylorMarie, Raelynn, and Brooke.
