Obituary

Betty Lou Harvin Witherspoon, affectionately known as "Mother Witherspoon," passed into
eternal rest during the early morning of October 27, 2022 at Brookdale Hospital, Brooklyn NY.
She was born in Sumter, SC on February 11, 1936 to the late Junius and Edell Smith Harvin.
While there, she attended elementary school and graduated from Lincoln High School.
On April 10, 1954, Betty Harvin married Leroy Witherspoon, who preceded her in death. From
that union seven children were born.
Upon her arrival to Brooklyn New York, Mrs. Witherspoon joined Liberty Baptist Church under
the leadership of the late Rev. Richard E. Williams.
She was a paraprofessional at P. S. #178 Annex, Brooklyn, NY.
Mrs. Witherspoon has held several offices at Liberty Baptist Church including Usher Treasurer,
President of the Carolina Ministry, Director of Food Pantry and Sunday School Superintendent.
She also served as Eastern Baptist Association Corresponding Secretary for the Christian
Education Sunday School under Rev. Ronald Simpkins.
Mrs. Witherspoon was a true believer in God and did all she could to spread His word. Teaching
children was one of her greatest passions. Christian education was very near and dear to her
heart. She was faithful in her work for the LORD and had been diligent for more than 50 years.
Mother Witherspoon was a pillar in her community and a mother to a host of children that
adopted her as their own.
She leaves to cherish her memories:

Ashburn, VA, Deacon Moses Harvin, Melbourne, FL, Rebecca Small, Sadie Harvin, Odell
Thompson, Geneva Greene, Shirley Major, Naomi Harvin, Ruth Pringle, all from Sumter, SC;
also left to mourn are 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and
close friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons; Walter Witherspoon and
George Witherspoon; two brothers, Easley Harvin and William Harvin and a son-in-law, Floyd Grant.
