On Thursday May 25, 2017, Mrs. Bertha W. Singleton "Bunt" transitioned from this life to begin her eternal journey to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on October 22, 1927 in Sumter County. She was the daughter of the late Ollie Wilson and Sarah P. Wilson.
She was formally educated and graduated from the Sumter County Public School system.
Mrs. Singleton joined Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and served in many capacities. Because of the services she rendered to Mulberry, she earned the title as "Mother of the Church". She was a member of the former Gospel Choir for many years. She was also a member of the Trustee Wives Ministry, Senior Citizens Ministry and the Missionary Ministry. Because of her love for the children of the church, she provided snack for them every Sunday. She also served as the kitchen culinary head for many years. Under her leadership she was best known for her cakes, turnips and dumplings.
Mrs. Singleton was also affiliated with several organizations to include, The United Order of the Tent (Elizabeth Tent No. 57), The Prayer Band and one of the organizers of the Jolly Worker Savings Club.
Her hobbies were cooking, sewing, bargain hunting, flower gardening and visiting with her family and friends. She was also called the "Hat Lady" due to her love for pretty hats.
She enjoyed working at the South End Shop (Roman's Store) for many years. Later she worked and retired from Campbell Soup Company.
Bertha was married to the late Earl Singleton, Sr. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: three sons, Earl (Mary) Singleton Jr., Arnold L. Singleton, Curtis (Clara) Singleton, all of Sumter; S.C.; One brother Levester (Martha Ann) Wilson; Three sisters Hattie (Fred ) Hammett, Gladys Addison, and Susie Swinton; two very special relatives, Edwin Roman, Jr. and
Doris "Ruby" Gary; two granddaughters Georgette (Carlos) Adams and Seneca Singleton; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mrs. Singleton was preceded in death by seven of her siblings; Verler Wilson, Lonnie Bell Wilson, Moses Wilson, Joshua Wilson, Virginia Leneau, Eva Troublefield, and Bertha Cotton.
Public Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Singleton will be placed in the church on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 1pm for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 2pm at Mulberry Baptist Church, 1400 Mulberry Church Rd., Sumter, SC 29153, Minister William Dukes, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Mulberry Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at the home of her son, Earl Singleton, Jr., 855 Woodcrest Dr., Sumter, SC 29150.
