Obituary
Mrs. Bertha Johnson Logan, 98, widow of James Edward "Sonny" Logan, Sr., was born on October 28, 1918 in Pinewood, SC to the late James Johnson and Rosa Amanda Harvin Johnson. She departed this life on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at her residence.
Mrs. Logan gave her life to Christ at the early age of 12 at Mount Olive AME Church, Pinewood, SC. After marrying her high school sweetheart at the age of 21, she relocated to Sumter where she became a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church.
She served as a Missionary, member of the Gospel Choir, Stewardess Board #2, Booster's Club and Culinary Staff. Her love for God, family, and church in that order was her life living.
Mrs. Logan is survived by two sons, James Edward (Jonnie) Logan, Jr. of North Valley Stream, NY, Raymond (Loretta) Logan of Sumter; a daughter, Beverly Chatman of Sumter, SC; a granddaughter, Tracy Smith (Todd) Owens of Sumter; a grandson, Rev. Lance L. (Susan) Smith of San Antonio, TX; great grandson reared as her own, Logan Smith of Sumter; a niece reared as her own, Rhonda Presha (Arnett Klugh) of Columbia, SC; an adoptive daughter, Thelma L. Bradley of Sumter; two step sons, Mr. Roosevelt (Maude) Canty of Sumter, Mr. Willie Roy (Alice) Canty of Fletcher, NC; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Vivian Presha and Mrs. Pansy Conyers of Pinewood, SC; a special cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth Burns of Sumter; goddaughter, Mrs. Almeta King of Darien, GA; her adopted families are Mrs. Georgia Thomas & family, Mr. & Mrs. James Lies, Jr., Mr. & Mrs. Gregory Miller, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Smoot, Mrs. Marilyn Ragin, Mr. Richard "Peter" Swinton; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and a daughter, Constance Roberta "Bert" Boatner.
Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 2-6pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Logan will be placed in the church on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 11am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 12N at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, 217 W. Bartlette St., with Rev. Laddie Howard, Officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends at the home, 594 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.
