Almeta Eaddy Chatmon, daughter of the late Reverend Alex and Laney Eaddy, was born on July 1, 1924 in Florence County, SC. She was the last sibling in her family. She entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 9:50pm, at her home of her daughter in Columbia, SC.
Almeta attended the public school system in Florence County. Almeta accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Church of God by Faith Holiness Church. She later became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
Almeta married Thomas Chatmon on April 17, 1949 and this union lasted until his death in June 2000. This union was blessed with five children. Almeta gave birth to two sons, Samuel Eaddy and Chappelle Dingle, prior to her marriage to Thomas Chatmon.
Almeta enjoyed her work for many years with the Save the Children Program, an after-school program that helped children with their homework. Almeta was employed by several families in the Sumter area as a domestic worker, and later worked at Campbell Soup Company.
She leaves to cherish her memory three sons: Marion (Chico) Chatmon of Sumter, SC, Daniel (Tammy) Chatmon of Columbia, SC, and Albert "Terry" (Mary) Chatmon of Stone Mountain, GA; two daughters, Lois Hasan of Columbia, SC and Shirley Lockhart of Sumter, SC; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Rose Eaddy and Rose Dingle both of Rochester, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by all her siblings: Emma Eaddy, Irene Lewis, Idella Weeks, Essie Eaddy, Bishop Roscoe Eaddy, Rev. Nelson Eaddy, and Ruben Eaddy; two sons, Samuel Eaddy and Chappelle Dingle; two sons-in-law, Herbert Lockhart and Stephen Tamir Hasan; and a grandson, Desmond Chatmon.
Public Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 from 2-5pm and family will receive from 5-7pm at Job's Mortuary.
Mrs. Chatmon will be placed in the church on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 10am for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church 320 West Fulton Street Sumter, SC 29150, with Rev. Dr. Cartrell Woods, Jr., Eulogist and Rev. Dr. Sammie Simmons, Presiding.
Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends at 662 Henderson Street Sumter, SC 29150.
Job's Mortuary, Inc., 312 S. Main Street is in charge of arrangements.
