Obituary

Alexander "Hippie" Butler, son of Nathaniel Butler and the late Margaret Gregg Butler, was born on April 26, 1946 in Sumter County, SC. He entered eternal rest on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at his home.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At a very young age, he joined St. Mark United Methodist Church. He was employed by Southern Coating for 13 years and retired from McArthur Construction.

"Hippie" was a loving husband, exceptional father, outstanding grandfather, dedicated son and brother, friend and survivor. He had a love for baseball and cars. He joined the Saltertown Baseball team, where he played for many years until he took interest in driving the latest fancy cars. His favorite cars were Cadillac, Lincoln, and Grant Pritt. Alexander was also a member of Boys Scout Troop #322. He enjoyed music, a game of horseshoes, bicycling, and loved all his family in every moment spent. With him being the "Life of the Party," many people gained memories of his collection of old school music while in his presence.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Deloris Butler; a loving father, Nathaniel Butler; a mother-in-law, Fannie Harvin; four sons: Tony Butler, Steven (Shawn) Butler both of SC, Ricky Mathis of PA, and Rodney Harvin of SC; two daughters, Iesha Butler (David Evans) of SC and Shanita Brown of PA; a grandson whom he reared, Courtland Lesane; four sisters: Thelma Davis of PA, Nita Butler, Lois Reynolds both of SC, and Lisa (Timothy) McBride; three brothers: Charles (Sharon) Butler of NY, Albert (Ann) Butler, and Davis Shaw both of SC; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Alexander was preceded in death by three brothers: Sammie Butler, Ernest Grant, and Ronnie Heyward; and one sister, Anna Mae B. Williams.
